THIS Father’s day – enjoy!

Hey THIS Church people!  A reminder for some and news for most, but THIS Church will NOT be meeting tomorrow, Father’s Day.  Instead, take Dad out for brunch, call your Dad,  thank God for your Dad, or spend some time meditating on the truth that we are all children of the same Dad, God our Father.

THIS Church goes into the hood!

Well, it’s going into the Westpark neighborhood in Irvine.

Yep, THIS Sunday, June 10th, at 11AM, THIS Church will be meeting at the home of Frank & Becky O’Campo at 3621 Baylor Street, in Irvine.  Our regular meeting place, the Atrium Hotel, is completely booked with high paying customers so Frank & Becky have graciously opened their home to us.  And not only are Frank & Becky hosting, they’re also BBQing!  Immediately after we’re done doing the Laugh & Listen part of THIS Church, we get to do the LOVE part by sharing a meal together.  They will provide great gourmet burgers with all the fixings and the most amazing potato salad in the world.  If you’d like to bring something tasty to share go here: https://www.facebook.com/john.ocampo.35#!/events/426225267400179/

Another first first for THIS Church

THIS Sunday, April 15th, will be another first first in the journey of THIS Church – our first Sunday morning gathering!  We will meet at 11am in the Palmira room of the Atrium Hotel to Laugh, Listen, and Love.  Can funny happen at 11am?  Will we keep our ‘edge’?  Will we attract people at 11am?  Do people want to go to a comedy church in the morning?

All of these questions and more will be answered – and many more raised – THIS Sunday at 11am.  Hope to see you some time (at 11am!).

Faith in action

Did you know that every time the church gathers in Jesus’ name it is an act of faith? Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “”For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”  So as we gather we can have the assurance of His presence and confidence that He will meet with us (Heb 11).  See what happened there? Just like we’ve  been talking about at THIS Church, revelation (Jesus’ promise to be with us when we gather) precedes faith (faith expressed in our gathering, expecting Him to be with us).

This past Sunday, I was reminded that behind the laughter and the fun we have there are some very real, and very difficult issues many, if not all of us, are facing.  We come carrying burdens and wondering how God is going to get us through and if he is going to wait until the last minute – again.  We find a way to walk through the door and we hope for an answer or some strength for our journey. When I started down the road of THIS Church some people asked if I thought humor would be an appropriate means of ministry for people in pain or sorrow. The more we meet the more I am convinced, while not the only way, humor is a very appropriate way to meet people in pain or under the weight of life’s burdens. I don’t know about you, but sometimes the thing I first lose sight of in my plight is joy. In the first chapter of the book of James we are told to “consider it all joy, or full joy, or greatest joy, when we face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” If we are to consider it joy, how might we express that joy outwardly? If we are facing trials it seems to me, according to scripture, the faithful thing to do is to consider it joy and then, in faith, act joyfully!  At THIS Church one of the things we will do is express our joy.  We don’t make light our pain or our burdens but we seek to see beyond them into our shared humanity and to the promise that God is with us in our plight.  I think it takes supernatural strength to laugh in the midst of adversity and trials.  How does it happen?  It happens when Jesus, the faithful one, meets us in faith and enables us to rise above our circumstances and experience His joy.

My prayer is that we, the people of God, will in faith, truly consider it joy when we face trials. I pray the world will see that in the Kingdom of God, when we face trials it does not mean God has left us, but rather God is with us in our adversity and exchanges our fear, worry, and woe, for his joy, peace, and strength.  Let us be encouraged when we face trials because we know God is with us and ready to meet our faith with an abundance of divine faithfulness.

THIS Christmas – a reminder and a party!

Merry Christmas!
We are 13 days away from Christmas Day and I can feel the excitement building. There are concerts, TV specials, perfectly timed movie releases and other reminders that the big day is coming. Our son Miles is counting down the days using his Star Wars Advent Calendar so he is always aware of how many days until Christmas. How about you? Are you counting down the days to Christmas? It seems like more than any other, this season is full of production and hype. There’s the hype of parties, store sales, and endless advertising. I half expect any day now when I walk out the door there will be a new Lexus with a big red bow on top of it! No wonder so many people dread the holidays. Can it ever live up to the hype?

When I read of the birth of Jesus I don’t see much hype. I read of prophecy come to life in the form of a baby born in a manger to little fanfare. Angels told the shepherds. Wise men from hundreds of miles away saw the signs. The Spirit was the one spreading the word to those who were listening. Maybe we should return to that same Spirit and listen. Let’s listen for the reminder of the significance of the day Christ was born. Immanuel. God, in the flesh, now appearing. For everyone. For always. He came to seek and redeem what has always been his most prized possession – you. No hype. Just truth in the form of a baby. Let’s try to keep Christmas from simply becoming an event, but rather, let it be a truth. Events and their accompanying hype will come and go, but truth will always remain.

I hope you can be with us THIS Sunday, the 18th at 5pm at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine. THIS will be a celebration – a party – in honor of the reality of our being found, redeemed, and freed to a life of love, joy, and freedom. We will eat (hors d’oeuvres and sugary stuff), drink, and be Merry! We invite you to join us and bring friends who need a laugh and a reminder that Peace, Joy, and Hope are a reality found in the baby who was born in a manger.

THIS Church tonight! 5pm at the Atrium

Of course on the Sunday we’re looking at how crazy, difficult, and confusing life is THIS Sunday goes sideways and not as planned. But that’s ok! Because I know that God is good, He has a plan, He is going to provide, and it’s going to OK.
Hope to see you tonight! Lord willing and the creek don’t rise!

THIS Church’s end of Summer News

Hello you good people!

Can you believe that August is drawing to a close and some kids have already gone back to school?!  Crazy!  I hope you are still having a great Summer no matter what the school calendar says. :)

August will always be a special month for me and in the history of THIS Church because it was one year ago on August 29, that THIS Church held its first gathering at the Nassif residence in Irvine.  People were meeting to hear me spill the beans on what God was leading me to do and to invite others to join me.  I will never forget being so nervous, excited, and relieved that THIS was finally happening.  I’ll also never forget my wife Michelle being so nervous for me and hoping I wouldn’t bomb my first night out.  If you weren’t there, here is a clip from the opening of the first ever THIS Church: http://youtu.be/weLffdKDoWE

A year later and we’ve switched locations, changed times, and made many new friends.  God has blessed me with a great friend and encourager in Keith Page, and his Global Sticky Network of ministries.  Keith has been a great help to me personally and to THIS Church through providing the Loft space and helping with administrative issues.  My new friend, Mike Wang, owner of the Atrium Hotel in Irvine, welcomed THIS Church into his hotel and has made sure that we are met with the greatest hospitality and service by the staff of the Atrium.  Additionally, many of you have committed to pray for THIS Church and some have even given financial gifts to see the vision of THIS Church come to life.  I am filled with gratitude for all that God has done and is doing in and through THIS Church.

THIS next year will be filled with blessings and challenges as we seek to take the Gospel to Orange County and to build a healthy spiritual community of people living in and experiencing Christ.  Our next big step will be to go to weekly gatherings.  We are still discussing exactly when this will occur, but we know it will be sooner than later.  Of course, with this move will come increased need of assistance.  We believe that God will meet our faith with provision and blessing.

I am asking you to consider 3 ways of helping THIS Church:

PRAY – Please pray for increased faith, spiritual discernment, boldness, and wisdom for the leaders of THIS Church.  Pray also for those whom God is calling to join the mission of THIS Church.  Pray for God to bring people to THIS Church who need to know that God loves them and that there is a place for them to belong.

GIVE FINANCIALLY- Ministry doesn’t take money.  Yep.  Just today I ‘did ministry’ over the phone and it didn’t cost a thing.  What money can do is remove barriers and/or enable ministry to happen more easily.  Can God do that without money?  Absolutely!  So why give to THIS Church (or any church for that matter)?  Simply (and I mean, really simply!), God desires for us to be generous people and to invest our money in extending the Kingdom of God.  When you give to THIS Church you will enable the weekly gatherings to begin to happen, you help support me and my family in our efforts to start THIS Church, and you help us to help others in need.  Pray about it first.  Let God lead you.  If you decide to give, you can give a tax-deductible online donation at http://globalstickynetwork.com/donate/.  Simply select ‘This Church’ in the dropdown box and follow the instructions. You can also write a check to made payable to “GLOBAL STICKY NETWORK” and write “THIS Church” in the memo section (VERY IMPORTANT!) and mail it to 1048 Irvine Blvd, Suite 730, Newport Beach, CA 92660.  Thank you in advance.

JOIN US! – Come to a gathering!  Come see what the mantra LAUGH, LISTEN, LOVE looks like in person.  Even better, bring a friend who doesn’t go to church.  Tell them, “At the very least, you’ll laugh and have a good time!”  We’d love to have you with us some time!

Thank you all.  I thank God for each of you and how you have supported me and Michelle along the way with your prayers, generosity, and friendship.

NEWS – Father’s Day at THIS Church.

What does Father’s Day look like at THIS Church?  Well…Laugh, Listen, Love.  Pretty simple, really.  We are excited about Father’s Day and about honoring dads in the THIS Church way.  What does that look like?  Dad’s (and the entire family!) will have lots of opportunity to laugh and be amazed by our special guest artist.  Then we’ll honor our dad’s by offering them our gratitude.   Finally, together we’ll honor and offer our gratitude to God our Father – our Creator, Provider, and Savior.

And all of this will happen in 60 minutes!  Yeah, 60 minutes, because we want to give you time to be with family and friends.  As a matter of fact, we’ll create some space, time, and snacks to do just that – BE with family and friends.  No pressure.  Just a sincere invitation to relax and be God’s family.

Hope to see you Sunday, June 19th at 6pm at the Atrium Hotel (Palmyra Room).
